After the Marriot case, the FCC (Federal Communication Commission) issued an Enforcement Bureau advisory bearing the heading “Warning! Wi-Fi blocking is prohibited”.

The advisory says, that Wi-Fi is essential for consumers and that personal hotspots are an important way consumers connect to the Internet. Any intentional interference with the use of personal Wi-Fi hotspots is prohibited, and operators of the U.S.A. that block or disrupt personal Wi-Fi hotspots to force consumers will be punished with monetary penalties.
The investigation against Marriott International revealed that the company deployed a Wi-fi deauthentication protocol to deliberately block consumers who sought to connect to the internet using their own personal Wi-Fi hotspot.
Marriot admitted that the users it blocked did not pose a security threat to the Marriott network.
It has been revealed, that many users sent their complaints to the Enforcement Bureau that other commercial operators may be distupring the legitimate operation of personal Wi-Fi hotspots. The Bureau is investigating about these situations.
